Emergency Contraception

Taken up to 5 days after sex they can prevent pregnancy.

Now if you are a student of this blog then you’ll be experts at putting condoms on, even when drunk: but sometimes s**t happens.

If you’ve had sex without a condom, or missed a pill, or not used any form of contraception at all, and you have had penis in vagina sex, then I’m not going to lecture you or give you a hard look 😐

But I will tell you about Emergency Contraception (also known as the Morning After Pill or in the UK as the Levonelle One Step or Ella One (brand name)).

It is one pill, taken as soon as possible after sex. It prevents pregnancy if taken quickly enough after unprotected sex, ideally within 24 hours but up to 120 hours. It is over 95% if taken within 24 hours.

It works by stopping any fertilized eggs from implanting in the womb.

In the UK, they are available for free from

  • Your doctor (GP)
  • Your local Young Person’s Clinic or Brook
  • Your local Reproductive Sexual Health service (or ‘Family Planning Service’)
  • Your local NHS walk-in service
  • Some GUM services
  • Pharmacists (some give it free to teenage girls, google ‘Free Emergency Contraception Scheme’ followed by your local area it to find out eg Sheffield, or Wandsworth)
  • Pharmacies can also sell it to women over 16, it costs £26
  • A&E departments (if you have tried getting it from everyone else)

Some areas are starting to prescribe a new emergency contraception pill which is effective up to 120 hours after unprotected sex. You could also have an IUD fitted within 120 hours of unprotected sex at a clinic.

  1. Hi bish, im on my fertile and we didn’t fully did it i can say since he put it in and it hurts so we stop and he put it in and hurts again and then we stop before he put it in he wipe the penis with his clothes, im afraid theres a pre cum in it still because doctors on tiktok said the pre cum contains sperm but my bf didnt masturbate before we do it will there be a sperm in the pre cum? After we do it i was so nervous because I don’t want to be pregnant so i take the lady pills here in the Philippines i have used it starting after unprotected sex to 8 days now will i be protected?
And if i stop using pills when i get period will i be pregnant? Even though i will never intercourse again with my bf i am scared. Ty

        1. Thank you! So what she was saying was that there are ‘swimmers in precum’ and yes there can be, and theoretically they can get someone pregnant. However, as the study (that she is referencing says) a) not everyone produces precum, b) even when people do it’s in amounts that would be very unlikely to cause pregnancy (which means that the risk is still much much much lower than the 3.1% risk of pregnancy from full ejaculation inside the vagina, somewhere between 0 and 1%), but also c) for any chance of pregnancy the precum would have to be deposited deep inside the vagina, right inside. So you’re not pregnant from what you describe.

The reason that sex educators (like this person in the tiktok) say such things about precum is that they are wanting to prevent people from relying on the ‘pull out’ method of contraception. That’s the method when people have penis in vagina sex without condoms and pull out before ejaculation. It’s not so much the precum which creates a risk of pregnancy from that, but the early spurts of actual ejaculation. But even if the penis ejaculates deep inside the vagina then the average risk of pregnancy from one time sex is 3.1%. More about all of that at my Am I Pregnant page again.

Do let me know if you have other questions! Perhaps you could let your friends on tiktok know about all this.

          1. Hi again Bish I am so nervous Right now, it supposed to be my menstruation date but im still waiting im scared, do you know someone who did what i Did and got period??

          2. No I’ve never heard of anyone getting pregnant from what you describe and I’ve been a sex educator for nearly 25 years. Maybe check out the Am I Pregnant page and scroll down to see all the comments, a few people come back to say they aren’t pregnant. Also, remember that periods are random (it’s more common that periods are random), if you are using a menstrual tracker app you should know that they are often not accurate. There’s more about this in my resource about how you can track your own menstrual cycle.

  2. Hello
My boyfriend and I tried having sex, but maybe I wasn’t ready for it and so I’d resisted a bit and so as soon as he tried to push it in, I felt pain and he stopped immediately. Can I get pregnant by an chance?
    Please help

    1. There’s more on this here Am I Pregnant? It’s very very unlikely that you are pregnant if he didn’t fully ejaculate inside your vagina. I’m glad you stopped when you felt pain. You might also find a couple of other articles here useful to help you think about having a nicer time next time (if you want to have sex again). Here’s one on how to have sex or this one about making the first time really really good Have the Best First Time Sex And if you are going to have penis in vagina sex again he could put a condom on. I’ve got loads of articles about those How To Use Condoms

  3. I had sex with my girl. I was hitting the g spot properly for the first time. I didn’t cum inside her I always pull out. She’s worried she thinks she’s pregnant

    1. If you didn’t ejaculate inside her then the chance of pregnancy is very very low indeed. Am I Pregnant? The problem with relying on pulling out as a method of contraception is that it’s hard to do in time and sometimes we ejaculate before realising (because orgasm and ejaculation aren’t the same thing). If she’s worried about being pregnant then it’s a sign that she may not be happy with you both relying on the pull out method, so you may need to do something else instead or as well (for example, condoms). 4. I had sex on d last day of my period we used a condom and he didn’t cum too. But a day after i started having headaches and cramps. Am i pregnant?

So me and my bf wanted to do it but he didn’t have a condom and we just wanted to see what it felt like. So we just put it in for a few seconds. I was on top of him I only kind of went up and down two or three times gently, and he was only inside me 10-20 (?) Seconds But i swearr to god I was the only one who had pre-cum and Also he didn’t cum we stop. Before we did that he took a bath first and I washed incase, My period was irregular I started having a period with may 7 and it ended with may 13 we did our session on may 23 and I also know that I will have a long time period. So I took the contraceptive pill when may 28 I started the first pills and I always tracked the day. I know that I have been taking pills for up to 28 days and now I have also watched on YT for 16 days that when the white pills are used up, I will have a period, but I still have 5 days which is 5 pills to take before the brown pills to start my period but i only have 3 days left and i should have a period which is june 17 the date. Today is June 14 plss bish I’m nervous I can’t sleep well either because I’m afraid I’ll be able to delay my period I hope you can help me thank you very much for this article and I found you thank you !!!!

    1. Hiya. I’m afraid I can’t give you much advice about the pills you’re taking – you might want to speak to the nurse / doc / pharmacy who gave them to you. What I can say is that it’s unlikely that sex without ejaculation will lead to pregnancy. More about this here Am I Pregnant?
