A-Z of Porn ‘L’

Understanding porn without actually having to watch it. L is for Latina/Latino and Lesbian or ‘Lesbian porn’

Latina/latino

This is a very broad porn term which refers to performers and models who may come from many different countries in places such as South America, Central America, some Caribbean Islands and some European countries. So on one level it’s Pornglish to describe someone’s accent or language, skin colour and other physical attributes. Lots of people want to watch people like this in porn so this label helps them find it. So far, so obvious.

However, as I talked about in a previous A – Z of Porn there are concerns that some porn might be either racist or perpetuating racist stereotypes. Many of these stereotypes are particularly relevant to an American audience but might include references to ‘latinos/latinas’ being illegal immigrants, or low paid workers, or people to have affairs with or are ‘spicy’ and up for anything sexually. It’s complex because how racist it is also depends on what the viewer is bringing to it, as well as what is going on in the porn.

Over at ‘E’ for Ebony I said this, which applies here:

There’s a lot of debate within the porn industry about whether it’s ok or not to use racial stereotyping in this way. Interracial porn is a category which is increasing in popularity. Many people say that using racial stereotypes and racist storylines is unacceptable and can lead to more racism. Others say that people watch and buy this porn because they know it’s wrong and that this is a turn on for them. A number of performers and porn producers are black yet produce some of this porn which is very stereotypical. So they might argue that they are reclaiming some of these stereotypes in order to give themselves power and clout in an industry which is ‘white’.

Again it’s up to you to decide I guess. I’d love to hear what you think.

Here’s an article about capitalism and porn that is relevant to this.

Lesbian

Lesbian is a very popular category on porn sites. At first glance it might look like we can go “yay for diversity”. However, most of this lesbian porn is made for (straight men) and a lot of lesbians really don’t like this kind of porn.

It’s hard to say what it is about much lesbian porn that lesbians don’t like as everyone is different and attracted to different things. One of the issues is to do with how real the action is but then a lot of porn is not meant to be a realistic interpretation of any kind of sex. Look at how neat and tidy their front rooms and bedrooms are. Also white sofas? Really? But it can be more of a turn on to a bi or lesbian to know that who they are seeing are actually bi or lesbian. So there is porn out there which is ‘lesbian porn for lesbians.’

Other websites you might find helpful

There are other websites a bit like this one who have more funding than mine so they can do more and can provide more support. There’s Scarleteen who have lots of great advice articles and also moderated message boards where you can hang out and ask questions of other folk like you. Brook also offer sexual health services in person in the UK and online. The Mix are a UK online youth support service. For straight up advice I really like Go Ask Alice from Columbia University. Remember if you are in the UK and want some support there are loads of services near you, lots of them have their own websites.

I still post on Instagram and also BlueSky when I’ve done a new thing, so you can follow me there. My YouTube has some of my old videos. You could also follow me on Reddit if you like (just starting out, so tell me which sub-reddits you’d like to see me post in).
