So you know what’s going on in porn without you actually having to watch it. R is for Redhead, Rimming and Romance. Q is for Queer, which is missing.
[Queer]
As you may have noticed, we’ve jumped over ‘Q.’ One category missing from most free porn ‘tube’ sites is ‘queer porn.’ As I’ve said here, queer is sometimes still used as an insult but it’s also now a powerful term for people who don’t conform to what society might consider ‘normal.’ There is porn which features non straight and non cis gender people but it’s often not very authentic, or it kind of fetishises difference or it doesn’t include everyone.
There is loads of queer porn out there: featuring trans/non-binary folk, or bisexual or pansexual folk. It doesn’t limit itself to particular genders having sex with each other. It also features lots of different kinds of sex. So this doesn’t really fit in with what the main free porn websites offer (which we’ve discussed before are mainly aimed at straight folks, with separate gay sites for people who want to see men having sex).
Often queer porn is made and owned by the performers or smaller studios who can’t afford for their stuff to be made available for free. So this stuff isn’t often available on the big porn tube websites. These big porn tube websites are mostly owned by the same people who own big porn studios or have distribution deals with them which make porn that is mostly for straight folk. So their clips are more freely available on these tube sites because theirs are the sites being promoted.

Redhead
Umm. This is porn with people with red/orange/ginger/sometimes pinkish hair? They don’t have magical powers to like bring people back to life or owt.
Rimming
Rimming is where one person licks around the anus of another person (though I’m sure someone has been able to do this to themselves in porn). As with absolutely all sexual acts, some folk like this, some folk might be, some folk don’t like it. Same goes for looking at people rimming too.
One thing they don’t usually show in porn is how to make rimming safer. Sex Infections (STIs) aren’t commonly transmitted doing this but it is possible to get other infections that can make people ill. So to make it safer you can use a barrier between the mouth and the anus. These are called dams and they can be used to make all oral sex safer. Using lube on the other side of the barrier can make it feel nice for the receiver.
Romantic
One of the most popular categories in porn is ‘romantic’ porn.
INT Gentle completely inoffensive music plays. The room is very bright. A gentle breeze ruffles the curtains. The camera focuses softly on the white sofa and glass coffee table. Couple see each other and smile.
Jo [in very expensive looking pants]: [inaudible] Hey
Alex [who’s been at the gym every. single. day.]: [inaudible] Hey
They look shy. They kiss. They do everything that you usually see in porn, in exactly the same order, but a bit more slowly and with more panning shots of their impossibly expensive apartment/hotel room.
{Ends.}
This is the porn version of ‘romantic’ but as a word it means lots of things to lots of different people. All of the above might be romantic or it might just be how some people enjoy sex. Romantic doesn’t have to mean slow and soft. Or gentle music. Or all smiley smiley. It can still be hard and fast and exciting and be romantic. Most important thing is that it’s consensual and everyone is trying to make sure they are all enjoying it as much as they can.
