BISH News June 2025

A small update of a few announcements and ways that you can help me out at BISH.

Help me with my research

You know I’m doing a PhD right? Did I not tell you? Okay so I’m doing a PhD, which is basically an independent academic research project, where I write 80,000 – 100,000 words about something. At the end I’ll be able to call myself Dr. My subject is BISH, yes my own website. It’s going to be called something like ‘What (else) do online relationships and sexuality education resources do? A materialist (or Deleuzo-Guattarian) case study of BISH.’

To pre-empt your questions a) yes I can do that, b) I won’t be able to disentangle me the researcher from me the person who runs BISH, I’ll be using a methodology that allows for that, c) yes that is a lot of words but it’s fine.

I’m around half way through and it’s all going fine, thanks for asking, but there is something you can help with. As you might notice at the bottom of each page here, I have a new BISH survey running, this time one which is signed off by the university I’m doing the research with (Nottingham Trent University). If you haven’t given me feedback before now would be a great time. So if you use BISH or have thoughts about BISH it would be lovely to hear from you. See the links below at the bottom of the page.

If you have used BISH in your work (say you’re a teacher, or a youth worker, or whatever) I would like to hear from you too please, but can you fill out the practitioner survey. Thank you thank you.

Help me with the broken internet

So as Ed Zitron has been writing about, and as Cory Doctorow has been speaking about with enshittification, Google search is getting worse. They are also rolling out AI results which is terrible for people like me who have a website which mostly people use Google to find. Most of my pages are now off the first page of search results, which is not great news. Many of them used to be in the top three of results that people searched for. BISH is still getting thousands of visits per day, but I’m getting anxious about it.

Sadly I can’t rely on social media to help me plug the gap. As Dr Caroline Are points out, it’s incredibly difficult for people who create content relating to sex (sex workers and sex educators) to have a social media presence. It also seems that because everything here is trans inclusive and pro-sex worker rights, there may well have been organised campaigns to mass report my stuff on social media (particularly Instagram). I’ve mostly been deplatformed in various ways on all the social media apps.

To help me with all of this can you please:

a) bookmark BISH and keep remembering to come back here if you want advice / guidance about anything to do with sex, love, and you.

b) tell someone about BISH (here’s how to make having conversations about sex and relationships easier)

c) when you google (or use other search engines) put BISH in your search and then you should get to me

d) follow me at Reddit and maybe introduce me to good subreddits. I’ve only just started out so don’t really know what I’m doing!

If you earn money, can you give me £1 a month?

As you can see there are no ads and no sponsors here. I self-fund a lot of this but also I am hugely reliant on the wonderful supporters I have who chip in £1 or more per month to help keep this website going. There are lots of ways of supporting BISH that also don’t involve money so please see how you can support BISH here. There are posters you can print out there too if you want to advertise it in real life.

Now please do that survey for me if you haven’t already, scroll down!

What do you think about BISH?

I’d love your feedback about the website please! I’m doing a PhD research project at Nottingham Trent University about BISH and it’s really important for me to get your thoughts about it. There’s a short survey here. It will just take around 10 minutes. It would really help me to help you, so it would be great if you could take part.

[Practitioners, although this website isn’t aimed at you, I’m keen to hear your thoughts about BISH too as you may have made use of it in your work. If you do work in or around relationships and sexuality education could you do this survey instead please. Thank you!]

Here’s How To Stay Updated With BISH

Most of my readers like to stay updated via email. So sign up here and get an automatic email every time I post a new resource on here.

And you can also keep up with me via social medias. I’m not an influencer, I put all my time into this website and also I think people trust sites like this more than social media. So I’m not very active on there but I try to post when I’ve done a new thing. TikTok. Instagram. Twitter (I’ve kind of stopped posting there now). YouTube. You could also follow me on Reddit if you like (just starting out, so tell me which sub-reddits you’d like to see me post in).

Funding and Support

This website is only funded by people like you who find it useful. As you can see, there are no ads, it’s all free, and I’m not really selling you anything (apart from my book, which is great). Here are all of the ways you can support BISH from just £1 a month and help keep this website going. Or just send me a quid to my PayPal right now! Thank you so much 🙂
